The late arrival shortened our ship excursion to one of the wonders of the world the amazing Roman ruins of Ephesus once home of 250,000 people, 2nd in the Roman Empire only to Rome and credited as being one of the cradles of Christianity with both apostles St Peter and St John having taught here
Ephesus was an hour away by coach from Izmir giving our guide an opportunity to provide a brief overview of Turkish history, an incredible story of a nation borne from many empires, many races and many battles
Arrival Ephesus was stunning with carefully restored ruins depicting amazing marble laid streets with many temples and pillars. Highlights included a 3 story Library, a 40,000 seat amphitheater and an inlaid stone that told arriving persons the directions to the nearest brothel .... obviously a must see for a long traveling Roman !
The ruins even included a row of public toilets complete with marble seats and running water where the richer Romans would often employ their slave to sit on prior so as to warm the seat .....imagine somehow putting that on your CV !
The only downside of the excursion was the rush to get through in the timeline - made more annoying by the fact that we then spent 40 minutes in a ceramics outlet before heading back to the ship - this form of side selling seems to be a travellers curse world wide !
Back on ship we headed to the buffet deck for a late lunch and to watch our departure while eating from our 14th storey vantage point !
After previous nights excesses of food and drink (me) the girls were keen on a quiet night and took to watching one of our few English channels showing almost 24 hourly the series Its a Wipeout ... !!!!
